Many of you have heard the term BCAAs. Some of you may understand what they are, others may not, but if you are into fitness I guarantee someone has told you at some point to take BCAAs to aid in your recovery and I am no different. BCAA stands for Branch Chain Amino Acid (Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine) and BCAA supplementation will provide you a host of benefits, such as:
- BCAAs stimulate protein synthesis aka increase the rate cells build proteins;
- BCAAs help improve workout intensity by reducing the amount of tryptophan that enters the brain and therefore reducing the amount of serotonin (serotonin levels rise during workouts and result in an increased perception of fatigue). Therefore, supplementation allows you to workout harder.
- BCAAs assist in the maintenance of muscle while dieting. The leaner the body gets the more likely it is to lose muscle. The body wants to hold onto fat and therefore turns to muscle to satisfy energy needs. Supplementing with BCAAs before, during or immediately after a workout provides the body an alternative energy source. This is because BCAAs are rapidly absorbed into the blood stream and thus can be immediately used as an energy source.
- Whey protein BCAAs are not enough – the BCAAs in whey are peptide bound to other amino acids and in order to be utilized must be broken down through digestion and absorbed into the bloodstream. Even though whey is fast digesting it still takes several hours to be absorbed into the blood stream.
If getting stronger and putting on lean muscle mass is your goal (which if you are reading this, I am sure it is) then you should consider adding BCAAs to your regimen. LuaVíve's Lionheart ReFuel provides 7 grams of BCAAs which is plenty to assist you in getting that better body and reaching your fitness goals.
